May is Bicycle Commute Month!
Did you know that May is Bicycle Commute Month in Sacramento (and surrounding areas)? Well, I’ll be honest, I did not learn this until earlier today. If I had a bicycle I would go out and ride it, but I no longer have one, so I thought I might do some research and find out just where I could find a reasonably priced bike, and where I could use this new mode of transportation in a safe manner.
After pricing bikes for a couple of hours I realized that the cheapest options are going to be found at (low and behold) Wal-Mart, a thrift store, or by searching classified ads in the PennySaver of Craigslist. I can not attest to the quality of any of the bicycles that come from these sources, but if you are like me and just need something for recreation on our local bike trails, I think the quality would be acceptable.
Another option might be to go back to college- literally. Cal State University Sacramento has a bike shop on campus, Peak Adventures, which rents out mountain bikes with a deposit of $300. I believe the prices start at about $35 for a 1-3 day rental, and $65 for a 4-7 day rental. Also, Peak Adventures occasionally sells some of their rental bikes at a reduced price. Renting a bicycle might be a good option for the more discriminate shopper who is looking for a certain quality and style of mountain bike.
The website you should visit for more information about Bicycle Commute Month is: www.bikecommutemonth.com. From this site you can navigate to the maps of Sacramento area bike paths, or you can use this link: http://www.sacregion511.org/bicycling/bikemaps.html.
Happy trails to you! Be safe, and don’t forget your bicycle safety gear!
